Interior Painting in Adelaide: Paint Choices, Preparation and Timelines

Choosing the right sheen room by room, what interior preparation involves, realistic timelines, and how commercial interiors get scheduled around trading hours.

Interior painting is less weather-dependent than exterior work and can be scheduled year-round — which makes winter a genuinely good time to book, when exterior crews are slower and lead times are shorter.

A single room usually takes a day. A full three-bedroom home takes four to eight. What sits between those two numbers is the amount of preparation, the ceiling heights, and how much of the house has to stay liveable while the work happens.

What shapes an interior painting scope

Every quote is written for the rooms in front of us, because these variables move the work considerably:

  • Which surfaces. Walls only, or walls plus ceilings, cornices, skirting, architraves and doors. The gap between those two scopes is large.
  • Ceiling height and stairwell voids. Anything above standard height needs platforms or trestles and slows every stage.
  • Condition. Nail holes and scuffs are quick. Cracked cornice joints, water stains, previous patchy repairs and damaged plasterboard are not.
  • Colour change. Dark to light usually needs a primer or a third coat for even coverage.
  • Occupied or empty. A vacant house is faster than one where furniture must be moved, covered and moved back each day.
  • Access and protection. Polished floors, carpet, built-in joinery and delicate fittings all need protecting before anything starts.

Ceilings are the most frequently underestimated part of an interior job. They take longer than walls per square metre — you are working overhead, cutting in around cornices and light fittings, and a ceiling shows every imperfection under Adelaide's bright natural light. If a quote looks light, check whether ceilings are actually in it.

Choosing the right sheen for each room

Sheen is the decision most people get wrong, and it affects both durability and how the room looks.

Sheen Best for Why Flat / matt Ceilings, formal living, main bedrooms Hides wall imperfections best; least washable Low sheen General walls throughout the house The practical default — some washability, still forgiving on imperfections Satin / semi-gloss Kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, hallways Moisture-resistant and wipeable; shows imperfections more Semi-gloss / gloss Doors, skirting, architraves, window frames Hard-wearing, easy to clean, defines trim against walls

Two rules worth remembering. The higher the sheen, the more it shows. Gloss on a wavy wall will highlight every undulation. And kitchens and bathrooms need moisture-resistant, mould-inhibiting products — a standard wall paint in a poorly ventilated Adelaide bathroom will grow mould within a year or two.

Preparation for interiors

The prep is different from exterior work, but no less important.

  • Patching and filling — nail holes, picture hook damage, dents, cracked cornice joints
  • Water stains — must be spot-primed with a stain blocker, or they ghost through even three coats of topcoat
  • Sanding patches flush — a proud patch under low sheen paint catches the light and is visible forever
  • Cutting out cracks in cornice and plasterboard joints so filler has something to hold
  • Spot-priming all patched areas so the finish doesn't flash (dry with visible dull patches)
  • Degreasing kitchen walls — cooking residue prevents adhesion, and it is invisible until the paint peels
  • Protection — floors, carpets, furniture, fittings, light switches

Older Adelaide homes bring specific considerations. Pressed metal and ornate plaster ceilings in character properties need careful, patient work. Homes built before 1970 may have lead-based paint in older layers — sanding it releases lead dust, so any disturbance of suspect surfaces should be assessed and handled to the appropriate standard rather than sanded back casually.

Timelines and living through it

Scope Typical duration
One room 1 day
Two to three rooms 2 – 3 days
Whole 3-bedroom home 4 – 8 days
Whole home with extensive repairs 8 – 12 days

You can usually stay in the house. Modern water-based paints are low-odour, and low-VOC and zero-VOC products are worth specifying if anyone in the household is sensitive, if there are young children, or if you simply don't want to smell it — the difference in product is minor and it is easy to write into the scope.

Practical tips for occupied jobs:

  • Empty wardrobes and shelves in the rooms being painted before the crew arrives — it saves hours of work you would otherwise be paying for
  • Group the work by zone so you always have finished rooms to live in
  • Plan bedrooms for early in the week so they're cured and habitable by the weekend
  • Move breakables and anything with sentimental value yourself
  • Keep pets in a separate zone

Commercial and office interiors

Commercial interior work has a different constraint: the space usually has to keep operating.

Most commercial painting in Adelaide is scheduled after hours, overnight or across weekends to avoid disrupting trade or staff. That changes how the job is staged and resourced, but avoids the far larger disruption of closing.

Other commercial considerations: low-odour and fast-recoat products so the space is usable the next morning, compliance with the building's induction and site safety requirements, coordination with other trades in a fit-out, and a written program tied to defined access windows.

If you're managing a retail, office, hospitality or strata property, tell us the access windows first — they shape the whole approach.

Getting the colour right

Adelaide's natural light is bright and slightly warm, which pushes colours to read lighter and warmer indoors than they do on a paint chip.

  • Buy sample pots and paint A3-sized patches directly on the wall — not on card held against it
  • Check them in the morning, at midday, and under artificial light at night
  • Test on more than one wall; a north-facing wall and a south-facing wall in the same room will read differently
  • Whites are not neutral. Cool whites can read blue-grey in south-facing rooms; warm whites can read cream in strong afternoon sun
  • Consider ceiling colour deliberately — a ceiling white slightly lighter than the walls lifts a room; the same white on both flattens it

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to paint a house interior? Four to eight days for a standard three-bedroom home, or about a day per room for smaller scopes. Extensive patching or repairs extend it.

Can I stay in the house while it's being painted? Yes, in almost all cases. Modern water-based paints are low-odour, and work can be staged room by room. Ask for low-VOC products if anyone is sensitive.

How many coats do interior walls need? Two topcoats over a properly prepared surface. A significant colour change — especially dark to light — often needs a primer or a third coat for even coverage.

What paint finish should I use in a bathroom? Satin or semi-gloss with mould inhibitors. Bathrooms and laundries need moisture resistance that matt paints don't provide.

Do I need to move all my furniture out? No, but the more you clear the faster the job runs. Crews will move and cover larger pieces; you should handle valuables, electronics and anything fragile yourself.

How do you quote an interior job? We walk the rooms, agree exactly which surfaces are included, note the repairs needed, and write a scope naming the preparation, products, sheens and coat counts. Every home is different, so every quote is written for that property.

Is winter a good time for interior painting? Yes. Interiors aren't weather-dependent, and winter is when Adelaide painters have the most availability — often meaning shorter lead times.

Do you paint commercial interiors after hours? Yes. Most commercial work is scheduled outside trading hours so the space keeps operating. Let us know your access windows when you enquire.
